1. Pumpkintines – Have fun drawing pumpkin faces with markers on the outside of clementines or oranges.
2. Boo-Nanas – Turn bananas into ghosts by drawing eyes and mouths with markers on the outside of the bananas. You can keep the bananas whole or cut them in half and, when serving, line them up with the cut side down so the “ghosts” are standing up.
3. Mummy Baby Pizzas – You can do this on sheet pizzas too – Use thin strips of mozzarella cheese to make them look like the white layers of a mummy, with some space in between, and put two black olive slices for the eyes.
4. Ghost Cheese Sticks – With a marker, draw two dots for the eyes and a bigger round circle for the mouth on the outside plastic of cheese sticks.
5. Pumpkin Fruit Cups – Draw a pumpkin face on the outside film of a snack fruit cup.
6. Spooky Halloween Menu – Create a fun menu using Halloween-ey names like: Monster Mash, Witches Brew, Zombie Treats, Spooky Supper, The Walking Taco. You get the idea!
7. Serve Halloween Kabobs – Make kabobs with orange and black foods such as:
Cubes of cantaloupe and blackberries or blueberries
Cubes of cheddar or American cheese with purple grapes or black olives.
8. Piping Hot Halloween Soup – Serve delicious pumpkin, squash or black bean soup from a big carved out pumpkin (put the soup into a container first and then the container inside the pumpkin). If you can, serve along with pumpernickel or whole wheat roll on the side. Or to be extra fancy, serve the soup in individual whole-grain bread bowls.
9. Orange Smiles – Make a tray of “orange smiles” by cutting oranges into sections, so that when kids put one in their mouth and smile, their smile is pure orange. Name the spread with a sign that says something like: “ORANGE you glad it’s Halloween? SMILE!”
10. Be Creative with Orange and Black Food Combos – Have fun coming up with your own fun combos of orange and black colored foods:
Orange: Pumpkin, squash, carrots, cantaloupe, oranges, orange juice, mandarins, papaya, mango, orange bell peppers, apricots, sweet potatoes, yams, orange lentils, corn, peaches, orange tomatoes, salmon, almonds.
Black – Blackberries, blueberries, black olives, black beans, black licorice, purple grapes, chocolate candy, chocolate pudding, chocolate cake, chocolate cookies, chocolate chips, raisins, figs, plums, black lentils, prunes.
Whatever you choose, thank you for your hard work nourishing our nation’s children
