Starting with Buffalo,NY’s record-breaking snowfall last week, winter has returned – and the Northeast is bracing for another huge snowfall on Thanksgiving Day. We can, however, be thankful for all the opportunities this gives us to work off the calories of holiday consumption.
How thankful, exactly? Well, here are some estimates….
It would take about 30 minutes of snowshoeing to burn off a serving of mashed potatoes, stuffing and gravy.
The slice of pumpkin pie? You’d need to shovel snow for an hour to offset that treat.
Here are more estimates of the amount of calories you can burn in 30 minutes. (Estimates calculated on a 150 pound adult and 70 pound child.)
Cross-country skiing: 238 adult/111 child
Downhill: 204 adult/95 child
Sledding: 238 adult/111 child
Snowshoeing: 275 adult/137 child
Shoveling: 148 adult/98 child
Snowboarding: 148 adult/98 child
And here’s the calorie count of some traditional treats:
Cranberry sauce (1/4 cup): 110
Mashed potato (1/2 cup): 66
Stuffing (1 cup): 170
Gravy (1/4 cup): 25
Pumpkin pie (1/8 pie): 316
However you choose to spend your time and your calories, everyone at FOODPLAY wishes you a safe and healthy holiday.
