Hiya friends!
It’s been a long, cold winter, and it’s been hard to eat in-season, fresh produce when everything outside is gray! Still, I’ve been making great progress with my Healthy Habits New Year’s Resolution. Coach said that all the energy I now have from eating real food has been great for my performances!
As winter ends, I’m tired of eating the same hot and heavy foods to warm me up every day. Who wants to eat oatmeal and thick vegetable soup when it’s warm and sunny out? Some fruits and vegetables won’t flourish until summer, but there are delicious natural treats that come early. Here are some fruits and vegetables that appear during spring:
Asparagus
This slender veggie is packed with the nutrients and antioxidants important for kids’ growing bodies. You can roast or grill it. I like it with a little bit of salt, butter, and lemon! Yummy.
Spinach
There are tons of fiber and vitamins in these leaves. The best part is that it’s one of those foods that are so good for you and still tastes great! Try mixing it in a salad, adding a cup to a fruit smoothie, or doing it my favorite way, putting it in a sandwich.
Strawberries
Is there anything better than fresh strawberries? When in season, this fruit is delicious, sweet, and practically melts in your mouth. You can add it to a smoothie, but I think it tastes best plain or with a drizzle of honey.
Apples
Spring apples are the most crisp and light variety you can eat. Still filling because of all the fiber, this snack will feel light and cool enough for the oncoming heat. This snack tastes even better with a side of peanut butter or some cheese.
Peas
Cute, small, and a vibrant green, these little orbs pack a mean nutritional punch. Full of goodies such as Vitamins C and K, they nourish your body. Try adding peas to pasta, or munching on some as a snack!
Until next time…
Love, Janey
