I’ve worked in and out of offices for years. I used to work in higher ed., where I sat at a desk in various offices at various colleges. This was pretty early in my marriage. I was making good money, and was basically pretty happy. And you know what they say about the “happy cat.” I put on about 45 pounds over the course of 5 years or so. Toward the end of my office years, I started to seriously dislike my job, and that seemed to affect my whole life. I was depressed, but instead of turning to eating, I turned away from it. I lost all the weight, and ended up leaving that miserable job. I got back to the career of my passion—theater.
I worked at 6 flags for several years, and sat at a desk no longer. I was outside in the sun, running and climbing and lifting—and blowing things up (I was a pyrotech at the stunt show). At 30, I was in the best shape of my life!
Now I work at FoodPlay, continuing my passion for theater and passing it along to children all over the country. Only now I can connect my passion for theater and exercise with a new-found passion for nutrition. This is what has completed the puzzle for me.
However, I’m back behind a desk for about 80% of my days. My solution? A treadmill desk! I’d read articles about the benefits of moving while working—and the dreadful statistics of how bad it is to sit at a desk all day—and took matters in to my own hands.
I found a cheap, man-powered treadmill at a tag sale, built my desk up with crates, and off I went. I’m convinced I’ll fall off of it one day, but I enjoy the feeling of keeping my body moving, and the increased brain power I seem to have—especially at the end of the day.
I’d love to hear your stories of how you keep fit while working in an office!
