Welcome to another FoodPlay Friday!
First, in FOODPLAY news this week, our first fall troupe is already making news. Check out yesterday’s post from our own Patti Dougherty about some recent performances organized by Torrington, CT’s Fit Together coalition (read more at the Lichtfield County Register Citizen). Also, the West Hartford News announces an upcoming performance in their area.
This week, we also received some exciting news from the School Nutrition Association, who published this year’s Secret Shopper results.
For the second straight year, at SNA’s Annual National Conference (ANC), School Nutrition magazine assembled a discerning group of ‘Secret Shoppers,’ who were charged with seeking out the most exciting items on display in the Exhibit Hall in Nashville. Each year, the magazine’s shoppers are given a simple, straight-forward mission: Tell us what products caught your eye—and why.”
Our Fruit + Veggie Tracker Bands made the top 60 this year, with this comment from the Secret Shopper: “This adorable bracelet pack…will help children eat their 5-a-day!”
In local happenings, as part of this year’s Food Day celebration, Hatford’s Charter Oak Cultural Center presents the free exhibit Carrot City from October 6th through November 22nd. Read more about the exhibit here.
Eating Rules‘ Andrew Wilder has challenged himself and readers to what he calls October Unprocessed, a month of eating only unprocessed foods. Today’s guest post at Eating Rules comes from Simple Bites‘ Aimee Wimbush-Bourque, who offers up some advice for those seeking family buy-in for the challenge, as well as a recipe for Maple Apple Chips that sounds like the perfect snack for fall.
Speaking of snacks (one of our favorite topics at FoodPlay), Robin Miller shares some kid-pleasing snack ideas at the Food Network’s Healthy Eats blog. Meanwhile, Amy at Super Healthy Kids shares some tips on Homemade Juices Kids Will Drink.
Hot cereal is the ticket for chilly autumn mornings, and this week’s bloggers have quinoa on their minds. If this grain is new to you, find out how to add some variety to your hot breakfast from Katie Sullivan Morford at Mom’s Kitchen Handbook. And look beyond breakfast with Jackie Dodd at Eating Rules.
Browsing food-focused blogs always makes me hungry, but nothing got my mouth watering this week more than these Fall Roasted Veggie Tacos from PUREmamas‘ Juli Novotny.
That’s all for this week! See you next FoodPlay Friday!

I immediately sent that taco recipe to my husband (he does most of the cooking at our house) with high hopes. I really appreciated your homemade juice tips as well. We’ve always used a strainer, but your method looks much easier, and more likely to return a clear juice.
