Welcome to another FoodPlay Friday!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and when it comes to giving thanks, I’ve got a pretty long list to work from. My life overflows with a bounty of loving family, precious companions, and meaningful work. FoodPlay, of course, falls into that last category, and I’m endlessly grateful for the opportunity to be part of an organization dedicated to empowering kids to be their happiest, healthiest selves.
These are the faces our traveling troupes get to see every day, and when these images make it back to us here in the office, it’s hard to imagine anything better.
For a more personal expression of thanks, however, the luckiest of us will gather around next week for a hot meal with our loved ones. Fortunately, the healthy food blogosphere is here to help us make Thanksgiving as delicious as it can be!
Pumpkin’s still a star this week, and Katie Morford keeps it real with her article, Kick the Can: Pumpkin Pie from the Ground Up at Mom’s Kitchen Handbook. If you’re on the lookout for a less traditional Thanksgiving feast, take a look at this Apple, Brie, and Sausage Pizza on a Pumpkin Crust from Nicole at Prevention RD. She also offers up some meat-free goodness with her Vegan Pumpkin Gingerbread.
For a twist on traditional stuffing, check out this recipe for Quinoa Stuffing with Dates and Walnuts from Jeanne Ponessa Fratello at The Jolly Tomato. At the Food Network Healthy Eats blog, Toby Amidor proves that potatoes aren’t the only choice when it comes to delicious mashes. At Keep Your Diet Real, Corrine Fischer pulls out her very first cookbook for a seasonal favorite, Baked Apples.
A number of bloggers have offered up their recipes for homemade cranberry sauce this season, including Melissa Halas-Liang at SuperKids Nutrition Blog, Emma Fogt at Balance a Healthy Life, and Rachel Tayse at Hounds in the Kitchen.
For those of us who could really use a complete Thanksgiving menu, Super Healthy Kids‘s Amy shares her Healthy Holiday Meal Fit for a Child. She also gets a head start on what to do with the next day’s leftovers, with this scrumptious, bento-style Turkey Wrap. On a similar note, head over to Simple Bites, where Aimee shares her tips for getting four meals out of one turkey.
At Nourishing Thoughts, Maggie LaBarbera suggests some ways to Get kids involved in Thanksgiving planning and cooking. And if the recipes here just aren’t enough for you, she also offers up a host of creative, seasonal recipe ideas.
That’s all for this week! See you next FoodPlay Friday!
